Love legal writing? Enjoy legal research? Interested in ad-hoc opportunities to do research and writing projects? Rather than—or in addition to—working a "regular" job, you can pick what projects you take on, and earn a significant portion of the revenue.
When you sign up with Brief Writers, LLC, you set your general rates, indicate what you are interested in, and agree to overarching terms.
Attorneys and firms submit opportunities to provide deliverables for a legal matter, such as documents or research, and provide specifics.
Brief Writers matches your skills and interests to the opportunities and offers to let you take it on (produce the output or perform the service).
You decide if you will accept an offer for a specific effort and at what price. Once you accept, you must complete it on time.
We offer legal writing, research, and other services — generally one deliverable/service at a time. In today's parlance, Brief Writers is part of the "gig economy" because each engagement is its own request. Think of it like you would if someone was ordering food to be delivered and you were the delivery driver.
Customers (mostly small firms and solo practitioners) will request production of deliverables such as a brief, motion, or letter — or performance of services such as legal research. Then you ("Co-Counsel" — a 1099 contractor) will select which opportunities you want to take on and get to work on the request. If the request allows a legal intern to do the work to save cost and you are not a licensed attorney, a licensed attorney will review your work before submitting it. This helps ensure the Customer gets quality results, and you continue to learn your craft.
Rather than having extensive and complex contractual overhead for each little request, Co-Counsel sign an Independent Contractor Agreement ("ICA") that defines the overall relationship. Then, each time a Customer wants a deliverable/service, you will sign a quick Statement of Work, which defines the particulars and refers back to the ICA for the general terms.
You decide. You can stick with the familiar, dip your quill into new areas of law, or work with a lawyer/ firm that you would otherwise not be exposed to.

In some ways, Co-Counsel are clients of Brief Writers. We help you find opportunities to flex your legal writing and research "chops" on real work. Your Client Portal is where your contracts with Brief Writers are found. This includes the Independent Contractor Agreement, each Statement of Work (SOW), and the Submission Declarations that you fill in when submitting the work product associated with each SOW.

Once you have agreed to take on a matter, you will receive an email with a link into your Co-Counsel Portal. Follow the View matter in secure portal link in the email to go to the portal. If this is your first matter, it will ask you to create a free Clio account which you will use for all of your Brief Writers work. The portal is where
Yes, absolutely you can. Brief Writers picks candidates who show promise, but we don't do trial by fire. If you are not an attorney, your work will be reviewed by an attorney before it is submitted to the Customer and you will get feedback on how to improve.
We offer legal support services in addition to writing briefs and researching the law. We also interview clients, take depositions, and notarize and file documents with the court.
We currently have staff licensed to practice law in Ohio and Kentucky, and are looking to expand to the surrounding states. But most of what we do for our customers does not explicitly require licensing. The customers are the attorneys, and we serve as their staff.
